OMG DNA CLC CSI

Young Scientists visiting the CLC for a Crime Scene Investigation into the murder of one of the CLC staff are now able to learn about and carry out cutting edge experiments to produce DNA fingerprints from the crime scene.

Students use fixed volume pipettes to measure out precise quantities of DNA samples and place these into gel trays. Electricity is used to draw the different sized DNA fragments through the gel thus producing the fingerprint.

The project which is supported by Newcastle University is helping to create a curiosity in science through engaging activities.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2012

spkupspkoutThe national theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2012 is 'Speak Up Speak Out'.

Each year the city holds a commemorative event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. In 2012 we are keen that young people, from across Newcastle, have the opportunity to have their voices heard. The photographs that are produced from this initiative will be part of our event for 2012. For Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January 2012, we are asking you to consider what you see and hear around you, and to use your voices to Speak Up against hatred and discrimination.

The images from the Nazi concentration camps in WWII shocked the world and led to the United Nations declaration on human rights to protect people from genocide and other forms of persecution. Sadly we know that genocide has occurred several times since then in places like Rwanda, Bosnia and Sudan see www.hmd.org.uk for more details.

Reporters win Gold at the CLC

london2012It’s 2012 and the London Olympics are fast approaching and in preparation for what is called “The Greatest Show on Earth” children from Kingston Park Primary School in Newcastle created special Olympics News bulletins based on events which they thought could happen at the Olympics.

Among the stories was the setting up of Usain Bolt as a drugs cheat, a terror attack in the Marathon event and a boy who won the bowling gold medal after practising on his Wii game at home.

The short films were recorded in the CLC’s fantastic TV studio where green screen technology allows stories to “appear” at venues such as the Olympic Stadium.
